It can be said that Steve Jobs is one of the most famous and influential innovators of our time. His journey from childhood to the creation of the first Apple computer is one that changed the way people live today. In order to be a great and life-changing innovator, Steve Jobs had to overcome many issues that came up in his life from his products failing at times, to getting fired from his own company. However, it was the struggles that Jobs went through that taught us lessons on innovation, business, creativity, and perseverance.
Steve Jobs went through many things, but all of them are things we can learn from. His life was an inspiration as well as a cautionary tale. He started from nothing with his company and eventually made his way to the top, creating some of the best products in technology the world has ever known, such as the Apple iPhone, iPod, iPad, MacBook, and Apple TV. He worked hard for what he wanted and used a team of people to help him, instead of him doing it all himself. It is said that great innovations are always made by a team, which is why all of the innovations made by Jobs' company are great and successful. While these aspects of him making it from the bottom to the top and working hard are inspirational to others, other aspects of his life can be used as a caution to others as well. Steve Jobs was often reckless in his work. Some employees have said that it was hard working with him because of the pressure he put on them. At one point he told all of them to leave the company, but only one stayed. Because of his childish behavior at times, he was fired from the very own company he started. Although it is important to keep a child like and creative spirit, it is also important to separate play and work. That lesson can be learned from Steve Jobs' firing from his company. It is a cautionary tale to all of those in business that there is nothing keeping you safe from failing, not even the own company you started. It is important to take everything seriously in order to succeed because it could all be gone in the blink of an eye, and Steve Jobs can attest to that.
Steve Jobs often said that the consumer did not know what they wanted and it was up to innovators to help them figure it out. This is one of his opinions that I agree with completely. Apple has created products from phones to MP3 players to hand held tablets, all of which were not requested significantly by the public. However, Apple took the step to create these innovations and present them to consumers and tell them that this is the next big thing, and this is what you need. That is part of what has made Apple so successful as a company. They keep consumers guessing on what they want next until the product comes out and consumers realize that this is what they have been waiting for. When Apple released the fingerprint sensors on the iPhone 5S, consumers did not ask for it. It was Apple who took the opportunity to innovate on their own products and present it to the public, which made the public crave more of what they were given. Apple has followed this philosophy very well, and it can also apply to other forms of business. When it comes to food, consumers did not ask for a create-your-own-meal version of Mexican food, but Chipotle was created and consumers keep asking for more of it, causing an Asian version of the chain to be created as well. It takes a company to let the public know what it is exactly that they need because consumers want so much already, they do not know what will really benefit them. Companies tell consumers what the next big thing will be and consumers follow along with them. In my opinion, the next big thing is a car that can drive itself. This is something that consumers need and car companies will innovate to give them, probably in the near future.
Apple products have taken over the economy because of Steve Jobs' productive ways to innovate. Almost every household in the United States has some form of an Apple product because it has become the necessary thing to have. In past years, I have accumulated two iPod shuffles, a numerous amount of iPhones that have come and gone, and a MacBook Air. In my case, I cannot leave my room without either my iPhone 6 or my MacBook Air. These products have transferred my life from paper to application (app.). I use my laptop and cell phone for everything including setting alarms, working out, taking notes, keeping up with the news, listening to music, keeping up with friends and family, and more. I work from my laptop when doing work for school. Some of my textbooks and notes are stored on my laptop for safe keeping and easy access. I communicate with friends and family through social media and text messaging, for the most part. It is easy for me to keep track of the lives of my loved ones when I have everything stored on my phone for easy access. I follow the news and media through social networking sites and alerts on my phone because it is easier for me to get the information on the go. Having an Apple product has made me more prone to using social media because I can access it faster than anything else to get information. My focus is sometimes diverted from more important things because I am scrolling through my Twitter account, or checking any Snapchat updates. Having an Apple product in my presence has sometimes caused me to lose track of reality and focus on what I do not physically have access to, social networking lives.
Through Steve Jobs', I have learned the importance of innovation, hard work, dedication, and technology. His lifestyle, successes, and even failures have taught me that technology and business are forever evolving and it is up to innovators and businessmen to keep it that way. Consumers want what they are given and technology continues to advance and change our lives for the better, and for the worse as well. Steve Jobs' has been a lesson to me because of what he accomplished and failed at. The biography by Walter Isaacson has proved to be a great teaching point when it comes to innovation, technology, and business.
